Suppose a customer asks an AI search tool how to choose an air-conditioner repair service in Kuala Lumpur. The answer might summarize common checks, mention local businesses, or link to a useful page. The company cannot guarantee a place in that answer. It can make its own information easier to find, verify and use.
What Is an AI Search Strategy?
An AI search strategy is a plan for helping people find accurate information about your business when a search product generates an answer. It connects three jobs and their owners: publish useful first-party information, make it accessible to the relevant search systems, and check what people actually see and do. A brand mention names the business; a citation links to a source; a visit means someone followed through. These are different outcomes, and none is guaranteed.
This article plans the work across a business. If the term itself is new, read our GEO introduction; for a broader search plan, see our SEO strategy guide.
Start With Customer Decisions, Not a List of Prompts
Choose a few questions that matter to a real customer. For an aircon repair company, one person may want to know whether a cooling problem needs a technician, another may compare repair and replacement, and another may be ready to book. Those are different tasks. A service page and a troubleshooting explanation answer different questions; neither should pretend to replace a technician’s assessment.
Record the question, customer decision, best destination page and person responsible for its facts. Do not publish a near-identical page for every prompt variation. If the business serves only parts of the Klang Valley, say so rather than writing a nationwide answer to appear in more searches.
Give Searchers Information They Can Verify
Improve the selected pages with real scope, service area, price conditions, useful steps and limits. Keep specifications and policies current. Genuine photos, measurements or named practitioners can add evidence; a generic paragraph copied in substance from every repair site adds little.
The same test applies elsewhere: a beauty studio can explain what a treatment includes and who it may not suit; a shoe seller can publish size and return details it can stand behind. Link related pages where a visitor needs the next answer. Useful information is not a trick for forcing a citation.
Make the Source Accessible
For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, a supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Google says there are no extra technical requirements for these features: ordinary crawl access, internal links and important text visible on the page still matter. A special AI schema or llms.txt file is not required for Google Search.
Other products use their own controls. OpenAI describes OAI-SearchBot as the crawler for ChatGPT search results, separate from GPTBot, which relates to model training. Check your robots and firewall settings against the platform you want to reach rather than treating all AI crawlers as one switch. Allowing a crawler still does not promise inclusion.
Let Real-World Evidence Support the Site
Your website is not the only public place where a business is described. Maintain accurate business profiles, product information and legitimate customer-facing listings where relevant. If a supplier, local publication or customer independently describes your work, check that the facts are current. Do not invent reviews, pay for disguised endorsements or flood forums with planted brand mentions.
A repair company might have an accurate service-area listing or an approved partner profile, if that relationship exists. These can help people verify the business; they cannot guarantee an AI recommendation. Our public brand-information guide explores how to keep these sources consistent.
Measure Mentions, Citations and Business Actions Separately
Keep a small, repeatable set of customer questions. Record the platform, question, available country or language setting, date, whether the business was mentioned, and which sources were linked. Repeat the check later with the same method. AI answers can change between runs; a handful of checks is an observation, not your market share.
Then look for visits and useful actions: enquiries, bookings or purchases where measurable. Search Console covers Google Search, not every AI product, and cannot tell you why a particular answer mentioned you. Our prompt-tracking guide shows how to record a small sample without inventing a visibility score.
What Should You Do First?
- Pick one task. Choose a customer question tied to an actual service or sale, and locate the existing page that should answer it.
- Fix the source. Add missing scope, evidence, limitations and an obvious next step; have the responsible person check the facts.
- Check access and consistency. Confirm the page is reachable and eligible for the search product you care about, then correct important public profiles.
- Observe before expanding. Save a small set of question checks, page visits and enquiries. Improve the page or add a distinct answer only when the evidence suggests a real gap.
The company does not need to cover every AI platform in its first month. It needs one reliable source page, a clear destination and a way to learn what happened. Use our one-page AI search checklist to inspect the chosen URL.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Are AI Search Strategies?
They are plans for making useful information discoverable, accurate and measurable across AI-assisted search experiences. Start with customer tasks, improve the relevant pages, check platform access and observe mentions, citations and visits separately.
How Do You Do SEO for AI Search?
Begin with sound SEO: crawlable pages, helpful original information, clear internal links and current business details. Google says its AI search features do not need special AI markup. Check other platforms' access rules separately.
How Can a Website Be Cited by ChatGPT Search?
Make accurate public pages accessible to OAI-SearchBot if you want them considered for ChatGPT search results, and give readers a useful reason to consult them. OpenAI's crawler access guidance explains eligibility, not a way to guarantee a citation.
