A customer asks an AI search tool whether an air-conditioner chemical wash includes refrigerant top-up. A Cheras service company might offer both, but the jobs have different conditions. If its website calls everything “full service,” neither the customer nor an answer system can tell what is included.
What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) means improving the information a business makes available so answer-generating search products can find, understand and, when relevant, use it to answer a question. Some answers give source links; others do not. AEO is a way to plan useful information, not a guaranteed placement or a separate technical switch.
This guide looks at questions across a business's website and public information. Our AI search page-readiness guide is the next step when you need to inspect one URL.
How Does AEO Relate to SEO and GEO?
SEO covers how a site is found and serves people through search. AEO asks whether the information can answer a specific question accurately. GEO is another label commonly used for visibility in generative search. These labels overlap, but AEO does not replace the underlying SEO work; our GEO introduction explains that terminology separately.
Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra technical requirements beyond Google Search. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, but eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. ChatGPT search has different access controls, including OAI-SearchBot. Treat each platform's rules separately rather than assuming one tactic works everywhere.
1. Map Questions to the Right Pages
List the questions customers ask before they decide, compare or request help. For the air-conditioner company, “What does a chemical wash include?” belongs on a service page. “How often should an air conditioner be serviced?” may deserve an educational guide if the business can answer it accurately. Service-area and contact details belong on the service or contact pages.
Assign one primary page to each important question. If the answer already exists, improve it before publishing another near-identical article. For the chemical-wash question, check that the service page states the actual cleaning scope and links to the booking or quote process. A maintenance guide can explain when to request an inspection, but should link back to that service page instead of repeating its terms. Our search-intent guide helps separate information requests from booking requests.
2. Make the Answer Specific and Checkable
Replace “complete service” with the actual scope: inspection, cleaning method, exclusions, when an extra charge might apply, and how a customer can get a quote. If refrigerant work requires separate diagnosis, say so. Do not publish a universal price or safety promise when it depends on the unit and condition.
Put the main answer in readable page text near a descriptive heading. Photos or diagrams can support a technical explanation, but should not be the only place it appears. Name who keeps the information current; outdated service terms can be repeated by people and answer systems alike.
3. Check Access and Consistency
For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, inspect important URLs in Search Console and check internal links, indexability and readable main text. Google says no special AI markup or file is required. A page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to be eligible as a supporting link. For ChatGPT search, check whether OAI-SearchBot is blocked by robots rules or infrastructure when appearing there is a goal. Access is a prerequisite for some uses, not a citation promise.
Compare public descriptions across the website and business listings. A service-area page, booking page and current business profile should not give conflicting hours, addresses or service scopes. Correct the source of an inconsistency instead of publishing more FAQ pages that repeat it. Our brand-mentions guide covers how to find and correct third-party references.
4. Measure Questions, Mentions and Business Actions
Keep a small record: question, assigned page, correction made and date. Check Search Console for the page's indexing and relevant Search traffic. Google's separate generative AI performance view reports impressions for pages shown in its AI features; it is a Google-only signal, not an all-platform citation count. For ChatGPT, analytics may show referred visits; a mention without a click will not appear as a referral.
Test a few real questions on the products your customers use. Record the exact wording, language, location, date, whether a source link appears and whether the answer describes your offer correctly. Results can vary between runs. Compare those observations with enquiries or sales you can actually measure. A mention is useful evidence, but not proof of a sale or an “AI ranking.” Our prompt-tracking guide shows a repeatable sampling method.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
AEO is the practice of making useful, accurate information easy for answer-generating products to discover and use when answering relevant questions. It builds on SEO and cannot guarantee a mention or citation.
What Is AEO vs SEO?
SEO covers a website's broader search accessibility, relevance and usefulness. AEO focuses the work on questions and the answers people may receive directly in search or AI products. The overlap is substantial; Google says its AI Search features do not require special technical optimizations.
How Do You Use AEO in SEO?
Start with questions your customers actually ask. Put verified answers on appropriate pages, check search access and internal links, then compare search visibility and business actions over time. Do not create duplicate pages solely to target the AEO label.
