AI Search Optimization: A One-Page Readiness Checklist

A Malaysian school-shoe retailer has a size guide, but its chart says only “standard sizing.” A parent asks an AI search tool how to choose between two sizes. The retailer cannot make the tool recommend it. It can make the guide easier for a person to find, verify and use.

What Is AI Search Optimization?

AI search optimization is the work of making a page's useful information accessible and clear to search products that generate answers. It begins with ordinary SEO, not a separate ranking switch. A page may be mentioned, linked as a source, or not used at all. Being eligible does not guarantee any of these outcomes.

This is a page-readiness checklist: what to check on one URL. Our GEO introduction explains the terminology; our AI search strategy guide handles business-wide priorities.

1. Choose One Page and One Customer Question

Write down the question and the page that ought to answer it. For the shoe shop, the question might be “How do I measure my child's foot for school shoes?” and the existing size guide should provide the answer. A product page can then show the sizes currently sold. These are related tasks, not interchangeable pages.

Open the page on a phone. Can a parent find the measurement steps and a next step without searching again? If not, note the missing detail before creating another article. Do not publish a near-identical page for every possible wording of the question.

2. Check Access for the Search Product You Care About

For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, the page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Check the URL in Search Console, confirm it is linked from the site, and look for accidental noindex, crawl blocks or a canonical pointing elsewhere. Also check the property's Search generative AI control under Settings: Include is the default, while Exclude prevents that site's content from appearing in those features. Google's AI features do not need a special AI file or schema; our llms.txt guide explains that optional proposal separately.

ChatGPT search has a different crawler. OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot for search results and GPTBot for potential model-training use. If appearing in ChatGPT search is your aim, review the access setting for OAI-SearchBot, plus any firewall or hosting rule. Blocking GPTBot for training is a separate choice. Do not open every bot to the whole site just because a checklist says so. Access makes discovery possible; it does not promise a citation.

3. Make the Answer Useful Without Inventing a Formula

Replace vague claims with information the retailer can verify. The size guide could show how to measure foot length, state the unit used in its chart, explain how the store's listed sizes correspond to that chart, and identify when a buyer should ask for help. If fit differs by brand or model, say so instead of implying one conversion always works.

Put the main answer in readable page text. Use a heading when it helps a person navigate. Add a real chart or product photo if it clarifies the decision, with a text alternative for information the image carries. No fixed word count, tiny content “chunks,” or special keyword pattern is required for Google's AI features. A neat layout cannot rescue an incorrect size chart.

The guide should link to the relevant school-shoe category or models, while product pages should link back to the size guide when fit is a likely question. Name the destination in the link text. Check that stock, size options, delivery and return terms agree across those pages. An outdated exchange policy can undermine the usefulness of an otherwise clear guide.

If the business offers English, Malay and Chinese versions, check each version's size units, instructions and same-language links. Do not assume translation alone makes the examples accurate for every product. Assign someone to update information when the product range or policy changes.

5. Record an Observation, Not an AI Ranking Score

Save the page URL, the customer question, what you changed and the date. In Search Console, check indexing and relevant Search visibility. Where the Generative AI performance report has data, use it as a Google-specific view, not a cross-platform score. Separately, note any useful visits and sales or enquiries that your analytics can measure. If you manually test an AI answer, record the platform, wording, country or language setting, date, whether the shop was mentioned, and whether the page was linked. Our prompt-tracking guide explains a repeatable sample. One answer is a sample, not a ranking position.

After a reasonable interval, repeat the same check. Ask whether the page is still accurate, accessible and useful. Do not call a change successful merely because an AI tool named the business once; do not call it a failure because a single test did not.

The One-Page Readiness Record

For the page you selected, write down these five pieces of evidence:

  1. Question and URL: the exact customer question and the page assigned to answer it.
  2. Google access: URL Inspection result, a live internal link, and the property's generative AI inclusion setting.
  3. ChatGPT access, if relevant: the OAI-SearchBot robots rule and any firewall block observed.
  4. Answer and next step: the verified detail added to the page, the supporting policy or product link, and its fact owner.
  5. Follow-up: a dated Search Console view, any measurable business action, and a dated sample of AI answers if you are testing them.

Mark each as done, needs work or not applicable. Fix the first real gap; a completed form is not a promise of visibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do You Optimize for AI Search?

Choose a real question and a useful page, check the relevant product's access rules, improve the answer with verifiable detail, and observe the outcome. Google's AI Search features use ordinary Search eligibility plus the site's inclusion setting; other products have their own controls.

What Is AI Search Optimization Called?

People also use terms such as GEO and AEO. The labels differ, but for Google Search the foundation remains SEO. The practical task is to make information helpful, accessible and accurate.

Can AI Do SEO Optimization?

AI can help draft a checklist or surface possible gaps, but it cannot verify your private sales, real product fit or live indexing without reliable access. Check consequential findings against the page, Search Console and the business owner.
