SEO helps pages become discoverable and useful in search. GEO is the industry label for improving how clearly a brand and its information can be understood and referenced by generative answer systems. They overlap far more than marketing headlines suggest.
What stays the same
Google states that established SEO best practices remain relevant to its generative AI search features. AI experiences still rely on pages that can be crawled, indexed, understood, and retrieved through core search systems.
- Accessible, indexable pages
- Clear search intent and useful answers
- Accurate information and original experience
- Logical internal links and site structure
- Credible mentions, references, and authority
- Fast, usable mobile experiences
What AI search changes
A generated answer may combine information from several sources and send fewer but more informed visitors. Pages need sections that answer specific questions clearly while still giving enough context, evidence, and next steps.
Entity clarity matters
Use consistent business names, service descriptions, author information, locations, profiles, and structured data. Entity clarity is not a schema trick; the visible content and external references must agree.
Make evidence easy to inspect
Publish first-hand screenshots, tested processes, case studies, checklists, methodology, limitations, and sources. Generic AI-written summaries add little reason for a search or answer system to choose your page.
Do not create a page for every prompt
Google advises against producing many near-duplicate pages for query variations. Build one strong page for one real intent, then use clear sections and internal links to cover connected questions.
Measure more than rankings
Review Search Console, qualified traffic, conversions, branded demand, referring mentions, and generative AI performance data when it is available. Ask leads how they discovered the business. AI visibility is not useful if it cannot support a real business outcome.
What cannot be guaranteed
No consultant can guarantee inclusion in a particular AI answer. Systems, prompts, sources, user context, and product interfaces change. The responsible promise is stronger technical access, clearer information, better evidence, and consistent measurement.
A practical SEO and GEO priority order
- Fix crawling, indexing, Canonicals, performance, and site structure.
- Clarify services, audience, location, expertise, and author identity.
- Create useful pages for real customer decisions.
- Add original proof and trustworthy sources.
- Build relevant mentions and backlinks.
- Measure visibility and leads, then improve the pages that matter.
