Search Volume and Keyword Difficulty: What the Numbers Mean

Search phrases grouped into page decisions

Imagine a Kuala Lumpur business that installs induction hobs but does not sell or repair them. A keyword tool lists “induction hob” and “induction hob installation Kuala Lumpur.” The broader phrase may have a larger search-volume estimate. Should the business choose it? Only after checking what each number means and what the searcher wants.

Search volume estimates demand. Keyword difficulty estimates the effort to rank in organic results. Neither tells you whether the query fits your business or predicts how many customers a page will bring.

What Does Search Volume Mean?

Search volume estimates how often a query is searched within a tool's defined market and period. The definition matters. Google Keyword Planner's “Avg. monthly searches” groups a keyword with close variants, averages the selected months, location and Search Network, and rounds historical figures. Google calculates this metric regardless of language: filtering keyword ideas by language does not make the volume a count of searches in that language. Other tools use their own data and models.

Volume is not traffic to your page. A search may end without a click, and one page can appear for several related queries. Treat the number as a demand estimate, not a visitor forecast.

What Does Keyword Difficulty Mean?

Keyword difficulty, or KD, is a tool's estimate of how hard it may be to rank organically for a query. It is not a Google score. Ahrefs calculates its KD from the number of websites linking to the current top-ten results. Semrush considers referring domains, its Authority Score for ranking domains, and characteristics of the results page. Both use a 0–100 scale, but their scores are not interchangeable.

Use KD to decide which results to inspect, then look at the pages themselves. Do they match the searcher's task? Can you provide a useful, accurate answer for your market? A low score cannot guarantee a ranking, and a high one does not settle whether a relevant page is worth improving.

Keyword Planner's Competition column measures competition among advertisers under the selected settings. It is not organic keyword difficulty.

Do Google Trends and Search Console Show the Same Thing?

No. Google Trends reports sampled, normalized search interest on a relative 0–100 scale for a place and period. A score of 100 marks the peak within that comparison, not 100 searches. Zero can mean insufficient data.

Search Console reports how your verified site appeared and was clicked in Google Search. Its impressions are about your site, not total market demand. Some rare queries are omitted from its reports. Use it to inspect your own pages and the queries they appear for.

How Should You Read the Metrics Together?

Return to the hob installer. A broad “induction hob” query could bring product shoppers or repair questions that the business cannot serve. “Induction hob installation Kuala Lumpur” may describe the actual service more closely. These are candidate phrases, not measured Malaysian search-volume or KD findings.

For each candidate, check four things:

  1. Reader task: Are the visible results about buying, installation or repair? Check the results instead of deciding from the words alone.
  2. Metric context: Record the provider, location, date range, Search Network and any language or device settings. Check what each setting changes.
  3. Business fit: Can the website answer the task accurately and offer a relevant next step?
  4. Existing pages: Is there already a page that should answer this need? Compare its content with the current results before creating another URL.

If the installation need is relevant and the current service page is thin, improve it first. The keyword research guide explains how to collect candidate topics; the search-intent guide helps identify the task behind a query.

What If the Numbers Disagree or Show Zero?

Check whether the tools cover the same place, period, search network and query variant. Even when they do, their estimates may differ because their data and methods differ. Do not convert one provider's KD into another's score.

A zero or missing estimate is not proof that nobody needs an answer. Keyword Planner may not show very low-volume ideas; Trends can show zero when data are sparse; Search Console omits some rare queries. A real customer question can still justify a useful section or page. Do not invent volume to support the decision.

Make One Page Decision

Choose a query group that fits an offer. Write a short record: the phrase, the tool and market settings, the demand estimate, which provider supplied KD, what the results show, and whether to improve an existing page or plan a new one. If the need belongs on an existing page, fill its gaps. If it is a separate task, consider a distinct page. If you cannot verify the answer, wait before publishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does “Keyword Search Volume” Mean?

It estimates how often a query or its close variants are searched in a defined market and period. It does not predict visits to your site.

What Does Keyword Difficulty Mean in SEO?

It is a third-party estimate of the challenge of ranking organically. Providers calculate it differently, so inspect the current results alongside the score.

What's a Good Keyword Search Volume?

There is no universal threshold. Compare estimates from the same tool and market, then consider the task, business fit and work required. A smaller relevant query can be more useful than a broad one you cannot serve.
