Your business can be named in an AI answer without getting a link. It can get a source link without anyone clicking. A link can also earn an impression in a report without producing a website visit. Treat these as separate observations before deciding whether AI search is helping your business.
Four Signals That Should Not Share One Number
| Signal | What you observed | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mention | The answer names your business or product in its text. | A link, endorsement or visit. |
| Source citation | The answer displays a reference or link to one of your URLs. | That the user opened it, or that the linked page supports every statement in the answer. |
| Feature impression | A platform reports that a link to your site was shown in a supported feature. | A brand mention, a click or a complete count of every AI answer. |
| Website visit | Your website records a session after someone arrives. | That the visitor saw a particular AI answer or that the answer caused a sale. |
These signals can occur together or separately. Our AI search guide explains how answers use the web; here we focus on what a site owner can observe.
Why Can an Answer Name You Without Linking to You?
An answer may name a business while linking to a directory. It may link to your guide without naming your brand. A citation is a visible source reference, not an endorsement or proof of an accurate summary.
Consider a hypothetical Malaysian phone-repair business. An answer might name it without linking, or cite its battery-replacement guide without a click. Neither observation proves a repair was booked; that requires separate website and enquiry evidence.
Record which page was linked. A battery guide and a booking page serve different tasks. If the answer gives an incorrect price or coverage claim, check the linked source and your current page: the claim may have come from elsewhere.
What Can Search Console and Analytics Actually Show?
Google's dedicated Generative AI performance report for Search shows impressions for supported features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. An impression means a link to your site was shown. You can examine data by page, country, date and device. The report does not count every textual brand mention, every source link in every AI product, or enquiries. Its impressions are also included in ordinary Web performance totals, so do not add the two totals together. See our Google AI features guide for eligibility and report limits.
Website analytics shows recorded sessions and what happened on your site. Google Analytics Traffic acquisition shows session source and medium, but referral information may be missing. “Direct” does not mean “AI.” Someone may also see an AI answer and return later by another route; do not attribute that visit to one answer without evidence.
A Search Console impression is not an analytics session, and one observed citation cannot tell you how often users saw that answer. See how to write an SEO report.
How Should You Record a Manual AI Answer Check?
Use a small log to inspect important customer questions. For each check, record the product, date, location or language, exact prompt, whether the brand was named, the linked URL if any, and what the answer actually claimed. Keep a screenshot or saved result if the platform allows it. A simple prompt-tracking workflow explains how to repeat those checks.
A few checks cannot produce an “AI ranking percentage.” Answers vary with wording, time and user context. One result may reveal a factual error, but cannot estimate all users’ exposure.
OpenAI's web-search API distinguishes URLs retrieved from URLs cited inline. This API example is not a rule for every consumer answer: retrieval and a visible citation are different observations.
What Should You Do With These Observations?
- Pick one real customer question. A repair, purchase or comparison question is more useful than a generic request to “recommend top brands.”
- Separate the observations. Record the name mention, linked URL, any platform-reported impression and the website visit as different fields. Leave unknown fields blank.
- Check the linked page and claim. If information is wrong, correct the source page, its date, terms and relevant internal links. If no useful page exists, decide whether one is needed.
- Compare with real site outcomes. Review landing pages, relevant sessions and qualified enquiries over time. A change in one signal alone does not establish why another changed.
A blocked crawler does not prove every link or mention will vanish; a product may know a URL through other routes. Our AI crawler guide explains access controls. To prioritize pages, use the AI search strategy guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Brand Mention the Same as an AI Citation?
No. A mention is your name in the answer text. A citation is a visible source reference or link. An answer can contain one without the other, or both.
Does an AI Citation Mean I Received Traffic?
No. A displayed link does not prove a click. Check your website analytics for recorded visits, while allowing for incomplete referral information.
Can Search Console Measure Every AI Mention of My Brand?
No. Google's dedicated generative AI Search report records supported link impressions, not every textual mention, citation across all products or resulting enquiry.
