Google’s 2026 guidance is unusually direct: AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems. A page needs normal Search eligibility, useful non-commodity content and sound technical foundations. There is no special AI schema, llms.txt requirement or guaranteed citation formula.
The short answer
SEO remains the foundation for Google’s generative AI features. Google describes retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out as using Search systems to retrieve relevant pages from its index before generating a response with supporting links.
Eligibility is necessary but never guarantees visibility. The page must be indexed, eligible to show a snippet, compliant with Search policies and included in Search generative AI features through Search Console. Google still decides whether an AI feature appears and which sources support a particular response.

How AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve supporting pages
Google says its generative AI Search features use core Search ranking and quality systems to retrieve relevant, current pages. The model can then examine information from those pages and generate a response with prominent links. This is why the work begins with crawlability and indexation, not a separate AI submission protocol.
Query fan-out broadens retrieval by generating related searches. A user asking how to repair a declining local-service website might cause searches around technical errors, local profiles, content gaps and conversion problems. Google does not publish every generated query or the weight assigned to each source, so a tool claiming access to an internal citation score should be treated cautiously.
Technical eligibility has three parts: the page must meet Search technical requirements, be indexed and remain eligible to show a snippet. In 2026, the site or relevant Search Console property must also be included in Search generative AI features. Meeting all four conditions only makes a page eligible; it does not guarantee crawling, indexing, an AI response or a supporting link.
What responsible AI Search optimization looks like
The strongest long-term opportunity is non-commodity information: first-hand processes, original examples, expert interpretation, useful comparisons, proprietary data, clear limitations and evidence a generic summary cannot reproduce. Rewriting the current top results in smoother language adds little information gain for either a person or a retrieval system.
Use topic architecture to help visitors move between genuinely different tasks. A pillar can explain the main subject while supporting pages cover implementation, troubleshooting or a specific use case. Do not create a separate thin page for every possible fan-out query; Google explicitly warns that creating many variations primarily to manipulate Search or AI responses can violate its scaled content abuse policy.
For Google Search, Google treats AEO and GEO work as part of SEO—not a replacement for it. Other AI platforms may have different retrieval and training controls, so keep platform claims separate. On Google, relevant images and video, accurate Merchant Center data and an up-to-date Business Profile can also create visibility beyond a standard text link when the task calls for them.
What independent studies suggest—and cannot prove
Independent research can reveal patterns across sampled results, but it cannot expose Google’s private source-selection weights. AI responses are also volatile: the same prompt, market or model may return different links later. The studies below are useful for forming tests, not for declaring universal ranking factors.

Use industry studies to decide what to test, then validate the effect with your own Search Console, analytics and business data. Do not copy a study percentage into a client forecast or describe it as Google documentation.

A generic list of benefits is easy to reproduce. A stronger page explains the actual engagement, shows anonymized deliverables, defines exclusions, answers buying objections and links to a relevant case study.
Product comparison
Do not assemble specifications without use. State the testing method, who each option suits, where it fails, the date and market checked, and any commercial relationship.
Local business guide
Combine accurate service details, location evidence, photographs, opening information and useful local constraints. Keep the Business Profile consistent instead of publishing dozens of interchangeable city pages.
An eight-step AI Search workflow
- Define the real task. Document the audience, decision, market and business outcome before collecting keywords or prompts.
- Confirm eligibility. Check robots access, canonicalisation, index status, snippet controls and the Search generative AI setting in the correct Search Console property.
- Map evidence and information gain. List what must come from primary sources and what first-hand expertise, data or examples the page will add.
- Build one complete answer. Answer the core need early, then add the comparisons, steps, limitations and proof required to finish the task.
- Organise for people. Use descriptive headings, concise paragraphs, tables and FAQs only where they make complex information easier to scan.
- Strengthen the full search entity. Connect relevant internal pages, keep visible structured data accurate, and maintain images, video, product feeds or business information where appropriate.
- Publish with accountability. Show the responsible author or reviewer, source important claims, disclose commercial relationships and set a review trigger.
- Measure and improve. Compare AI impressions, total Web performance, engagement and qualified conversions. Refresh weak sections based on evidence—not because a vendor score changed.
Control AI Search inclusion, previews and model training separately
Search generative AI control: Search Console now lets verified owners include or exclude a property’s links and content from supported generative AI features. Inclusion is the default. Exclusion removes the property from AI Overviews, AI Mode and supported generative AI experiences in Discover, but it is not a negative signal for other Search results. Property inheritance matters, so verify the setting at the appropriate parent or child property.
Page-level Search controls: Use noindex when a page should not appear anywhere in Google Search. Controls such as nosnippet, max-snippet and data-nosnippet manage how much page content may appear in Search previews. Allow Googlebot to crawl the control so Google can process it.
Model-training control: Google-Extended relates to training and grounding in certain Google systems. It does not replace the Search generative AI control and does not remove a page from normal Search. These settings solve different publisher decisions.
Measure visibility without inventing an AI ranking score
As of 31 August 2026, the dedicated Search Generative AI report is available worldwide. Keep its visibility data beside—not in place of—normal Search and business reporting.

What no AI Search guide can promise
- Google does not publish the exact source-selection weights, generated fan-out queries or model logic for an individual response.
- No checklist, schema, word count, vendor score or content format guarantees an AI Overview or AI Mode supporting link.
- The dedicated Search Console report currently emphasizes impressions and selected dimensions; it is not a complete citation or conversion attribution system.
- Independent studies use changing samples, countries, prompts, interfaces and vendor databases. Their percentages should not be treated as permanent benchmarks.
- AI Overviews and AI Mode can use different models and techniques, so the same query can produce different responses and links over time.
- A citation can exist without a brand mention or click, and a click can still fail to create a qualified business outcome.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode FAQs
Do I need special GEO markup for Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special schema for its generative AI Search features. Normal Search eligibility, useful content and accurate structured data remain the foundation.
Does Google use llms.txt?
Google says Search ignores llms.txt for ranking and generative AI visibility. You may maintain one for another service that supports it, but it neither helps nor harms Google Search.
Must my page rank in the top ten before it can be cited?
Google publishes no top-ten requirement. Independent datasets show substantial overlap with high-ranking pages, but they also find sources outside the top results. Treat organic visibility as useful context, not a citation guarantee.
Where can I see AI Overview and AI Mode performance?
Use Search Console’s Generative AI performance report for impressions by page, country, device and date. Use the normal Search results report for overall Web clicks and queries, then connect analytics and lead data for outcomes.
Can I exclude my site from Google’s generative AI Search features?
Yes. The Search generative AI control in Search Console can exclude a property from supported features. Exclusion stops its links and content appearing there and removes associated AI impressions and traffic, while other Search results are not penalized by that choice.
Does Google-Extended block AI Overviews and AI Mode?
No. Google-Extended concerns training and grounding in certain other Google systems. Use the Search generative AI control for inclusion in supported Search AI features, and noindex only when the page should leave Google Search entirely.
Should I create a page for every query fan-out variation?
