What Is a Backlink? How Links Work in SEO

A backlink is a link on a page from another website that points to a page on your website. It may help people discover you, send referral visits and give search systems context about relationships between pages. It is not a guaranteed vote, a fixed unit of authority or a promise that the destination will rank.

Direction gives the link its name

A publisher creates an outbound link; the destination receives a backlink. A normal crawlable link uses an <a href>. There is no separate “dofollow” HTML attribute.

TermDirectionJob
Backlink / inbound linkAnother site → your siteReference, discovery or referral
Outbound linkYour site → another siteCitation or useful destination
Internal linkOne page → another page on your siteNavigation, discovery and context
Broken linkLink → unavailable destinationCreates a failed journey

When Website A links to Website B, A has created an outbound or external link. Website B has received a backlink. The HTML is the same; only the point of view changes. A link between two pages on Website B is an internal link, not a backlink.

Evaluate the source page, destination URL, clickable anchor text, surrounding sentence and link attribute together. A metric without this context cannot explain why the link exists.

Source pageWho published it?Real relevant page
DestinationWhy this URL?Best answer for the reference

ContextWhy is it mentioned?Editorially useful
Check one backlink
  • Open the exact source page.
  • Confirm the destination works.
  • Read the surrounding paragraph.
  • Record the anchor and rel attribute.
  • Decide whether it serves a real reader.
  • Note referral visits or enquiries where available.

Separate discovery, understanding and ranking

Links can help people and crawlers discover a destination. The anchor and surrounding text provide context. Google also has link-analysis systems that help it understand what pages are about and which may be helpful. None of this means one backlink guarantees crawling, indexing, traffic or a ranking position.

Possible roleWhat happensWhat it does not guarantee
Human discoveryA reader can follow the referenceA click or conversion
Crawler discoveryA crawlable <a href> exposes a URLImmediate crawl or indexing
ContextAnchor and nearby copy describe the destinationThat every description is trusted
Link analysisSystems evaluate relationships among pagesA known value for one link
ReferralVisitors may arrive from the source pageOrganic ranking improvement

Normal editorial links need no special relationship attribute. Paid placements should use rel="sponsored"; user-added links can use rel="ugc"; nofollow is appropriate when the publisher does not want to associate with or trust the destination. Continue with the anchor text guide.

Beginner action plan
  1. Strengthen the page worth referencing.
  2. Find websites with a real audience overlap.
  3. Offer a useful reason to cite the page.
  4. Track the exact live placement.
  5. Review patterns rather than celebrating raw counts.
  6. Keep sponsored and UGC relationships qualified.

Google Search Console and third-party tools answer different questions from different indexes. Search Console says its Links Report is a sample, may show links found over time that no longer exist, groups data by canonical URL and root domain, and does not identify nofollow links. Use exports for investigation—not as a final count of every backlink on the web.

Separate earning, creating and paying

The safest long-term goal is to earn references because a page is useful. Review opportunities with the backlink quality framework before outreach.

PathExampleMain risk
EarnedJournalist cites original dataRequires real value
RequestedRelevant resource-page outreachLow relevance or mass email
CreatedBusiness profile or partner pageDuplicate or low-value listings
PaidSponsorship or advertorialUnqualified ranking credit

A backlink can create several types of value at once, but they are not interchangeable. Track what can be observed and label what is only inferred. Ranking changes rarely belong to one link alone because content, technical eligibility, competition and many other signals move at the same time.

OutcomeEvidenceInterpret carefully
Live citationExact source URL and contextA live link is not automatically high quality
Referral trafficAnalytics session and landing pagePrivacy and attribution can undercount
Enquiry or saleCRM, form or agreed source questionMay involve several touchpoints
Brand exposureRelevant publication, mention and audienceReach estimates are not attention
Search visibilityPage/query trend over a suitable periodDo not assign the full change to one link

Decide what to do next

A useful page, clear positioning and crawlable destination come before link acquisition. Then use responsible link building strategies and measure qualified placements, referral visits and business outcomes.

Common mistakes

  • Buying large packages because the count looks impressive.
  • Treating every backlink as equal.
  • Calling every normal link “dofollow.”
  • Judging a link only by DA or DR.
  • Forcing exact-match anchor text.
  • Expecting one link to guarantee a ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Links remain useful for discovery, context and reputation, but they work alongside content relevance, technical eligibility, competition and many other signals.

There is no universal number. Compare the actual result landscape and focus on relevant, defensible references to useful pages.

No. It can still bring people, awareness and legitimate citations. A rel attribute is not a complete business-value score.

They can be the same HTML link viewed from opposite sides. The publisher calls it an external or outbound link; the receiving website calls it a backlink.

What is a referring domain?

It is a root domain that links to your website one or more times. Ten backlinks from one domain are ten link placements but usually one referring domain in tool summaries.

No. A crawlable link can help discovery, but crawling and indexing depend on access, canonicalization, content, quality systems and other conditions.

Start with Search Console’s Links Report, analytics referral data and a reputable third-party backlink index. Then open the exact source pages before making a quality or risk decision.

Each tool has its own crawler coverage, discovery schedule, canonical rules, deduplication and freshness. Compare trends within one consistent source and verify important placements manually.

Its Links Report includes links Google found over time and may show a source that has since changed or disappeared. Confirm the live page and allow for reporting delay.

No package can guarantee legitimate value or rankings. Buying links for ranking credit is listed in Google’s link-spam examples. Start with useful pages, real business profiles, relevant relationships and responsible outreach.
