Google algorithm history is not a penalty list to chase. It is a record of how Search evolved from link analysis toward systems that understand language, quality, spam, experience, and context. This timeline separates confirmed facts from industry nicknames.
No public list contains every internal Google change. This page covers major milestones Google announced or explained, important industry names, and every named update retained on the Search Status Dashboard from its November 2021 records through August 2026.
How to read this timeline
“Google-confirmed” means the system or update is described in Google documentation, an official blog, or the status dashboard. “Industry name” means the SEO community uses the name, but Google did not necessarily define it as one official system. This distinction prevents correlation from becoming fact.
Algorithm, system, and update are not the same
Google uses many ranking systems together. A core update is a broad change to how those systems assess content; a spam update improves policy-violation detection; named systems such as RankBrain may operate continuously. A decline during a rollout does not prove a specific “penalty.”

Use an evidence hierarchy for every update claim
The official dashboard confirms selected update names, start dates and rollout durations. Google documentation explains current systems and policies. Official blog posts provide historical context. Industry reporting can identify a nickname or visible volatility, but it cannot reveal a private factor list or prove that one update caused one site's change.

Understand how current systems work together
Google describes many automated systems working together. The list is not a recipe, and a page does not receive one public “algorithm score.” Systems primarily assess individual pages while site-wide signals and classifiers can also contribute.

Treat retired system names as history—not current switches
Google currently lists Helpful Content, Hummingbird, Panda and Penguin under retired systems because they evolved, were incorporated into successor technologies or became part of core ranking systems. Their durable lessons remain useful; diagnosing a modern decline as a fresh standalone “Panda hit” is not.

The Ranking history records selected updates and service incidents, not every change Google makes. The tables on this page include named updates and exclude generic ranking incidents from the update count. Dashboard times use US/Pacific, and recorded duration describes the posted rollout window—not a guaranteed moment when every URL stops moving.
- Open the official incident record, not a screenshot or social post.
- Record start, completion and product: Ranking, Serving, Crawling or Indexing.
- Separate a named update from a service disruption.
- State the date the record was last verified.
- Do not infer unpublished factors from the update name.
Build a baseline before diagnosing traffic
Without a baseline, normal seasonality, a tracking break or a site release can look like an update effect. Preserve comparable Search Console, analytics, crawl and business data before making major changes.

Aggregate site traffic can hide opposing movements. Compare like-for-like periods and group by page type, directory, query intent, country, language, device, Search type, publication cohort and conversion role. A site-wide average position is rarely enough.

- Competitors that gained for representative queries.
- The same period in a comparable season.

Respond to core updates with page-level evidence
Google recommends avoiding quick-fix hunting. A small decline may not require action. For sustained losses, inspect whether the page still gives a satisfying, reliable answer compared with other useful results. Improvement can be reflected over time, including outside another named core update, but no recovery date is guaranteed.
- Confirm the rollout and affected page/query cohort.
- Check technical eligibility before judging content.
- Compare the task, format and evidence with useful results.
- Improve accuracy, originality, completeness and experience where evidence supports it.
- Publish substantial changes with an honest update record.
- Measure by cohort and allow recrawl/reprocessing time.
Respond to spam updates by removing the process—not hiding symptoms
If the site created scaled, scraped, cloaked, expired-domain, site-reputation, link or other abuse, stop the source process and remove or correct affected outputs. Compliance may be recognized over time, but changing dates, adding bylines or using a different AI model does not cure an abusive purpose.

AI assistance and scaled abuse are not the same
Google does not ban content because AI helped create it. The risk comes from purpose and execution: generating many pages primarily to manipulate rankings can violate scaled content abuse policy whether the work is automated, human or mixed. Useful AI-assisted publishing still needs accountable authorship, factual review, original contribution and a maintained user purpose.

Measure recovery without manufacturing causation
An update is one event among content releases, competitor changes, seasonality and demand. Record implementation dates and evaluate affected cohorts. If visibility improves, describe the sequence and evidence; do not claim one edit “reversed an algorithm penalty” unless Google provided that exact enforcement evidence.

Know when not to change anything
Do not launch broad rewrites when the movement is small, data is incomplete, tracking is broken, the rollout is still active or the affected pages remain useful and conversions are stable. Preserve the baseline, document the observation and wait for enough evidence. Inaction can be the responsible decision.
Limits of any algorithm timeline
- Google does not publish every ranking change, system weight or threshold.
