A beauty salon in Malaysia wants to know whether its website brings appointment enquiries. A booking-page visit, a “Book” click, an enquiry received by the site and a staff-confirmed appointment are different actions. GA4 can record the website steps, but each event must mean what its name suggests.
What Is the Difference Between an Event and a Key Event?
In Google Analytics 4 (GA4), an event records an interaction such as a page view, form submission or purchase. Some events arrive automatically; enhanced measurement collects others when enabled. Recommended and custom events require setup. A key event is an event you mark as especially important to the business.
Marking the booking-button click as a key event makes GA4 count those clicks as important, but it does not make them completed bookings. The setting changes reporting, not the action itself. Our SEO metrics guide separates visits, actions and business outcomes.
Which Action Should You Measure?
Ask what the salon can verify on its website. A page_view shows the booking page loaded. A separately configured button event shows interest, but the form could fail. GA4's enhanced-measurement click event covers outbound links, not every button. Google recommends generate_lead for a generated lead, such as an accepted enquiry form.
Send that lead event only after the site confirms it received the enquiry, for example with a reliable success message or confirmation page. Staff must still check the appointment records to see whether the enquiry became a booking. GA4 cannot infer that later outcome from the form event.
How Do You Set Up a Useful Key Event?
- Define the trigger. Specify the form's confirmed success state and an event name. Check whether the site already sends that event, so one enquiry does not fire two tags.
- Implement it. Send the event with the Google tag or Tag Manager, or derive it from an existing event in GA4 when the available conditions truly identify success. A general
form_submitmay include other forms or unsuccessful enquiries. - Mark it as important. In GA4, open Admin → Data display → Events and mark the event as a key event.
Event names and parameters should describe the action, not identify the customer. Do not send names, phone numbers or email addresses through ordinary Analytics events. Marking an event as key affects future reporting; it does not rewrite historical data.
How Do You Check Whether It Works?
Test three paths: open the form, attempt an invalid submission, then complete a valid one. The lead event should fire once only on success. Enable debug mode with Tag Assistant or preview mode, then inspect the event and its parameters in Admin → Data display → DebugView. Realtime can confirm the key event reaches GA4.
If nothing appears, check the tag, property and consent settings. Allow up to 24 hours for standard reports. Repeated tests can add counts: check for duplicate triggers and whether the key event counts once per event or once per session.
How Do Key Events Help You Read Organic Traffic?
In Traffic acquisition, select the session-scoped Organic Search channel and the salon's chosen key event. Key events count important actions under the configured counting method; session key event rate is the share of sessions with at least one. These measures answer different questions. Our GA4 organic traffic guide shows how to inspect sources and landing pages.
If organic sessions rise but accepted form enquiries do not, inspect the landing pages and booking journey. If enquiries rise without more staff-confirmed appointments, check their quality and follow-up. Our SEO measurement guide connects those steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Make an Event a Key Event in GA4?
In Admin → Data display → Events, find the event and mark it as a key event. If it has not been collected yet, you can create and mark it ahead of time. Test its trigger before using the count to report results.
What Types of Events Does GA4 Have?
GA4 groups events as automatically collected, enhanced-measurement, recommended and custom. Use an existing or recommended event when it fits the action; create a custom event when it does not.
Where Can I See Key Events in GA4?
Use DebugView and Realtime to verify a newly triggered event. Then use the Key events metric in a relevant report, such as Traffic acquisition, to compare it by channel. Standard reports may take time to update.
